CaravanSerai Ltd. is home to one of the most unique collections
of handmade Central Asian textiles in the United States. Our inventory is the product of owner Casey Waller's selective taste from over 40 years of trips to Central Asia, Persia, and Turkey. There he selects his choice favorites from thousands of handwoven Carpets and Kilims, as well as textiles from Armenia, Uzbekistan, and the Caucasus, plus an extensive array of Central Asian dowry jewelry and collectibles from Northern Afghanistan and the Amu Darya. Our story begins in the early 70's when Casey traveled to the Near East for the first time working for a major American oil company. There he first encountered the woven artworks of the region which would become a life-long passion. Abandoning the oil fields he opened shop in Austin in 1976 and began traveling throughout Central Asia three to four times a year searching out the best examples of carpets, textiles, and jewelry to populate his store. A lot has changed in the region in the last 40 years but the long tradition of tribal weavings and textile artwork is stronger than ever and the tradition is still producing handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that add elegance and history to any room. |
